The Independent Journal Review: A Critical Examination

The notion that a broad societal consensus on the necessity of maintaining academic freedom is not sufficient to guarantee its extent and maintenance is well-documented. Continuous negotiation between stakeholders is essential to determine the boundaries of academic freedom (Barnett and Wiber, 2018; Rectors' Conferences, 2018; Enyedi, 2018).

The recent discourse on 'fake news' has coincided with attempts by some governments to limit the independence of research (Goldman et al.). This development is not surprising, given the increasing importance of the question of who should be able to influence research and how this influence can be exercised without compromising the productivity and integrity of scientific inquiry.

In the current political climate, the independence of research has become a major issue. The growth of science and its associated technologies have turned it into a costly endeavor, with research capacity becoming a significant source of power for actors in the 'knowledge society' (Barnett and Wiber, 2018). As a result, attempts to instrumentalize science and disregard its autonomy have grown.

Science has become a vital component of modern societies, seen as a potential solution to survival problems (Zechlin, 2017). The independence of research is thus a critical strategic issue in contemporary societies. In order to maintain the integrity of scientific inquiry, it is essential that researchers are able to operate independently and freely, unhindered by external pressures or influences.

In conclusion, the independent journal review is a crucial aspect of maintaining academic freedom and ensuring the integrity of scientific research. As the 'knowledge society' continues to evolve, it is essential that we recognize the importance of protecting the independence of research and promoting open communication between stakeholders.
